RSS All Day

# Issue: Social Media sites are arranging my feed how they think I should read them.

# Solution: RSS.

## TL;DR

I want an app that shows me all updates I want to follow.

RSS (Rich Site Summary; originally RDF Site Summary; often called Really Simple Syndication) is a type of web feed which allows users to access updates to online content in a standardized, computer-readable format. These feeds can, for example, allow a user to keep track of many different websites in a single news aggregator. The news aggregator will automatically check the RSS feed for new content, allowing the content to be automatically passed from website to website or from website to user. This passing of content is called web syndication. Websites usually use RSS feeds to publish frequently updated information, such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, video. An RSS document (called “feed”, “web feed”, or “channel”) includes full or summarized text, and metadata, like publishing date and author’s name.

## Caveat

A lot of social media sources do not support RSS because they want you to use their platforms to see their ads.

## Workflow

### Create feedly.com account. Import old Google Reader feeds or add sites that I want to follow (and have RSS feeds configured)

### Create getpocket.com account.

### Configure reederapp.com on iPhone and Mac to pull from Feedly & push to Pocket.

### Quick reads on iPhone or Mac. If I need to spend more than a few moments on a story, push it to Pocket for later.

## Notes

You can absolutely use Feedly and Pocket only if you are Android and/or Windows only. I just like the Reeder interface because it incorporates swipe gestures. In this case, I’ve configured it to swipe left to mark un/read and swipe right to send to pocket.

There are plenty of other RSS readers out there. Here is a list http://ift.tt/2AHsOnw .

I miss Google Reader a lot. http://ift.tt/1up6LcO

“A heartfelt young adult graphic novel about an Indian-American teen’s attempt to reconnect with her mother’s homeland through a magical pashmina shawl. Priyanka Das has so many unanswered questions: Why did her mother abandon her home in India years ago? What was it like there? And most importantly, who is her father, and why did her mom leave him behind? But Pri’s mom avoids these questions-the topic of India is permanently closed. For Pri, her mother’s homeland can only exist in her imagination. That is, until she finds a mysterious pashmina tucked away in a forgotten suitcase. When she wraps herself in it, she is transported to a place more vivid and colorful than any guidebook or Bollywood film. But is this the real India? And what is that shadow lurking in the background? To learn the truth, Pri must travel farther than she’s ever dared and find the family she never knew.”

“Charlie Lamonte is thirteen years old, on her own, and questioning what was once a firm belief in God. So naturally, she’s spending a week of her summer vacation stuck at an all-white Christian youth backpacking camp. As the journey wears on and the rhetoric wears thin, she can’t help but poke holes in the pious obliviousness of this storied sanctuary with little regard for people like herself – or her fellow camper, Sydney. As the Crow Flies has been nominated for the Slate Cartoonist Studio Prize (2013), four Autostraddle Comics & Sequential Art Awards (2014), and an Eisner (2014).

October 18, 2017

“A new, additional ongoing ANIMOSITY series! One day, the animals woke up. They started thinking. They started talking. They started taking revenge. Now, they’ve started building. In a city by the sea, a new power is on the rise…and they’re making an animal kingdom all their own.  From the brilliant mind of creator/writer Marguerite Bennett (INSEXTS, Bombshells and Batwoman) with artwork by Eric Gapstur–ANIMOSITY: EVOLUTION is an exciting new series that expands upon this already amazing world!”

[Animosity {the primary series} has been a great read so I’m looking forward to this additional series.]

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Comic Book Pre-Order

A while back, I got into an interesting twitter conversation with David F. Walker about how companies measure the success of a comic book by the pre-orders of the monthly book. I’ll talk about collected editions in a bit.

For the uninitiated, a a pre-order of a comic book are solicited 3 (or more) months before the book is available for retail sale. As such, there are no reviews nor are there many previews available for stores and consumers to research. What makes this really frustrating is because these are monthly books, you’ll have purchased issues 1, 2, 3, maybe even 4 before you can read #1. The Atlantic Monthly published in-depth article about this process http://theatln.tc/2sgcGZR

So for my nickles and dimes to affect publishing, they need to be spent pre-ordering books and hoping that they’ll be good. I do not like to operate this way. Traditionally, I prefer to heavily research purchases, and I like me a bargain. A creator is pretty much never going to make a dime off of any of my bargain bin or used purchases. (The same is true for “normal” books. Your used book purchases don’t help an author in an direct way.)

What especially frustrated me, was that according to Walker, my purchases of collected editions come too late to help the actual creators. A book is either approved or cancelled long before a collected edition comes into play. According to http://nyti.ms/2s4bV6r Black Panther crew was cancelled after less than a month of retail sales. No trade paperback sales are going to help that situation.

What lead me to tweeting questions to Walker was this article http://bit.ly/2qX2W2w .

So here is a draft of my JUN17 pre-orders:

Please note, these are not recommendations. I’ve not read them nor have I read reviews of them. I’m selecting them based on the writers and/or the solicitation blurbs.

Artist’s Edition (and related) Fascination

Very basically, the Artist’s Edition format is a hardcover-bound facsimiles of original art at original size.

This format allows for people to simulate owning original art at a fraction of the cost of buying it.

There are a two things that muddies the basic definition.

  • Publishers aside from IDW have their own names for theirs.
  • IDW also started 3 other lines: Artifact, Artisan, and Portfolio.

Below is a chart I put together to explain the differences.

Feature Chart

Bound Original Art @ Original Size Original Art @ Reduced Size Complete Story
Artist’s Edition (IDW)

Apex Edition (2000AD)

Archival Edition (Hermes Press)

Art Edition (Dynamite)

Curator’s Edition (Kitchen Sink Books/Dark Horse)

Gallery Edition (Dark Horse & DC/Graphitti Designs)

Original Art Archives (Genesis West)

Original Art Edition (Titan)

Studio Edition (Fantagraphics)

Artisan Edition (IDW) Yes

No Yes Sometimes 5
Artist’s Edition Portfolio (IDW), Portfolios (various) No
Unbound

Notes

  1. Exception: A minor amount of pages may be missing. In those cases, the publisher will replace with high-resolution scans or other versions of the art
  2. Exception: A few titles have art that is slightly reduced due to the vast size of the original art. To my knowledge, the exceptions are Charles M Schulz’s Peanuts Artist’s Edition and Hal Foster’s Prince Valiant Studio Edition.
  3. Mostly 12″x17″ or 15″x22″. However, the extremes are 9″x13″ and 17″x23.25″.
  4. Mostly 12″x17″.
  5. Wally Wood’s EC Comics and Dave Stevens’s Rocketeer do. I’m unsure if Jack Kirby’s Pencils & Inks and Kevin Eastman & Peter Laird’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles do or not.
  6. Mostly 12″x18″.
  7. These portfolios contain full stories: Bernie Wrightson’s Muck Monster, Michael Golden’s G I Joe Yearbook, Neal Adams’s Thrill Kill, Russ Heath’s Yellow Heat, Walt Simonson’s Lawnmower Man. These portfolios do not contain full stories: EC Covers, Gabriel Rodriguez’s Locke Key, Gabriel Rodriguez’s Locke Key Cover, Walt Simonson’s Ragnarok, Wally Wood’s THUNDER Agents.
